Phi Mu Alpha FAQ:What is Phi Mu Alpha? Phi Mu Alpha is a national fraternity for men of music. It is the oldest, with its instalation as a national fraternity on October 6, 1900; and largest music fraternity in the country with over 140,000 brothers and chapters on over 200 college campuses.
What is the Object of the Fraternity? The Object of this fraternity shall be for the development of the best and truest fraternal spirit; the mutual welfare and brotherhood of musical students; the advancement of music in America, and a loyalty to the Alma Mater.
What are the benefits of membership? There are many benefits in becoming a Sinfonian. When becoming a member you join a brotherhood of men that are bound together for mutal helpfulness. Not only does it bring men together as friends but it creates a network of men across the country, old and young, that helps a man support the challenges that face him in his life and his work. All Sinfonians are bonded together by a common interest-their love of music. Becoming a Sinfonian teaches men to develop their art, not for the art itself, but as a means for enriching the lives of others. Through a variety of events, Sinfonia offers many opportunities for performance, community music outreach, and other activities designed to develop a true appreciation for the power of music to uplift the soul.
Are music majors only allowed to be in the Fraternity? Any man with a love of music is elligable to become a member of the Fraternity.
What is the process of becoming a member? "Rush Events" help prospective members meet with the members of the Fraternity. Through musical and social events the two groups are able to get more aquainted. All people who participate in the rush events are considered for probationary membership.
